Should I Take SAT Subject Tests More than 2,000 colleges and universities around the country accept SAT scores. As you begin your search for the perfect university or college, it is imperative to review all of the admission requirements for schools you are interested in attending. You may find that many schools reference additional tests, such as the SAT Subject Tests. (As many as 160 institutions require or recommend submitting an SAT Subject Test score for admission.) Should you take an SAT Subject Test? Well, that depends on many factors. Here is an overview on the SAT Subject Tests to help you decide whether or not they are truly necessary for your goals. [RELATED: What Does SAT Stand For?] What are SAT Subject Tests? SAT Subject Tests are content-based tests that allow you to showcase your skills in a specific subject area. These tests are designed to help you paint yourself as a better candidate for admission. There are 20 SAT Subject Tests covering a variety of subjects, including history, math, science, English, and foreign languages. Here are a few basics you should know about the SAT Subject Tests: The hour-long tests are entirely multiple-choice. You can take up to three SAT Subject Tests in one sitting. However, students cannot take both the SAT and SAT Subject Tests during the same testing administration. Each test costs $18 (unless youre taking a foreign language with listening test). However, you will also pay a $26 fee per testing session, so it is cheaper to take more than one test in one session. These are the only national admission tests where you get to decide which test to take based on your own personal interests or aspirations. Should I take an SAT Subject Test? The main benefit of taking SAT Subject Tests is that you can differentiate yourself in the college admissions process. SAT Subject Tests allow you to showcase your depth and breadth of knowledge in a specific area of interest. For example, if you excel in History and English, consider taking the SAT Subject Test in Literature or the SAT Subject Test in U.S. History. However, dont take an SAT Subject Test just for the sake of doing iteach requires as much preparation and focus as any other exam. In addition, an SAT Subject Test may be required to enroll in a specific program or apply to a college, depending on your school. Check with the admissions office at your prospective college to get more information on application requirements. Colleges may also use SAT Subject Test scores for purposes beyond admission. For example, a high score on an SAT Subject Test may qualify a student to skip an introductory course or satisfy basic requirements for a particular major. It is also important to keep in mind that unlike AP courses, which are designed to mimic an introductory college-level course, SAT Subject Tests are based on material a student would learn in a high school classroom. In this way, an SAT Subject Test may be a good alternative for students who would otherwise struggle in an AP course. How do I prepare for SAT Subject Tests? Preparing for SAT Subject Tests is not unlike preparing for any other high school final. Acclimate to the tests level of difficulty by taking online SAT Subject Test practice tests, reviewing concepts that you can expect on the exam, and creating flashcards. The best time to take SAT Subject Tests is at the end of a course, when youve been introduced to all of the concepts and the material is still fresh in your head. In addition, be sure to tailor your test prep to the type of SAT Subject Test youll be taking. For example, you may need a different test-day strategy for taking the SAT Subject Test in Literature than you would when taking the Spanish with Listening SAT Subject Test. At the end of the day, deciding whether or not to take the SAT Subject Tests rests on you (unless your desired college or university requires them for admission). Remember to think of these tests as a way to make you a better applicant for your potential school. How is the MCAT Scored An MCAT score report consists of three portions: Biological Sciences, Physical Sciences, and Verbal Reasoning. These sections are marked on a scale of 1-15, for a total of 45. In 2013, the average applicant scored a 28.4 overall, while the average matriculant (accepted student) earned a 31.3. An explanation of what each result means in regard to percentiles can be found here. It is important to note that the examination is not curved against others who sit for the same assessment. The AAMC utilizes a formula, which is not public, to project the percentage of test-takers who will answer a question correctly. They then assign numerical ranges to the test based upon this data. This can prove frustrating, as the percentage needed to earn a specific numeral score varies from MCAT to MCAT. However, it is relatively consistent across tests and accounts for the difficulty of different versions of the examination. When completing practice tests, a detailed score report with ample information about performance on specific types of passages, question types, and subjects is provided, but a score report from a true test contains just the 1-15 score for each section. Here are five strategies for MCAT practice teststhat you may want to use. Biological Sciences consists of biology and organic chemistry, but it is typically geared heavily toward biology. Physical Sciences consists of general chemistry and physics. When individuals discuss the science portion of the test, they are referring to these two sections. Both contain 52 questions that must be answered within 70 minutes. Both also contain stand-alone questions and passages. The passages frequently involve analyzing experimental data, while the standalone questions are generally fact-based. This portion of the MCAT essentially covers the 100-level biology, general chemistry, and physics courses, as well as the 200-level organic chemistry classes that are typically required for applying to medical schools. Exam content differs significantly from the finals generally assigned in those classes, in that it is more concept-oriented than detail-oriented. Calculators are neither permitted nor useful for this portion of the test, as any calculation that is required to arriv e at an answer will be very basic. The Verbal Reasoning portion involves no outside knowledge, but requires a significant amount of time practicing techniques in order to feel comfortable with it. There are 40 questions from seven passages, which must be answered in 60 minutes. The passages vary drastically in terms of content, requiring analysis of historical, persuasive, philosophical, and scientific writing. It is impossible to predict what type of passages will be presented. Certain selections are simple in nature, while others utilize elaborate vocabulary and complex sentence structures. They can thus be difficult to comprehend. A number of strategies exist for addressing these passages, but one key to understand is that no outside knowledge should ever be used to answer the questions. The MCAT requires the test-taker to analyze the text itself for all responses. The MCAT can only be completed at specific testing centers, must be registered for well in advance, and utilizes rather stringent security protocols that are explained in detail on the day of the assessment. It is a computerized testand breaks are permitted between portions of it. However, test-takers may not leave the testing center or use their cellphones during these breaks. While studyingfor the test, you may want to consider an MCAT tutor.

Instructor Spotlight Lillian Brijeski Instructor Spotlight: Lillian Brijeski Lillian Brijeski, Instructor of Kumon Math and Reading Center of Tarrytown This July, Lillian Brijeski is celebrating her sixth anniversary as the Instructor of Kumon Math and Reading Center of Tarrytown. Over the past six years, Lillian has inspired the young students in this small village town along the Hudson River, and continues to find ways to maintain their motivation and build their self-confidence. Lillian’s passion for education and strengthening student’s ability started long before Kumon. For over 12-years, she shaped the minds of 3rd and 4th grade students as an elementary school teacher. Josef Albers Josef Albers March (19, 1888 March 25, 1976) was born in Germany. His work is known in America and Germany. He is a great artist and educator of his time. Josef also formed the basis of some of the art education programs of the twentieth century. Accomplished as a designer, photographer, typographer, print-maker and poet, Albers is best remembered for his work as an abstract painter and theorist. This quote is about importance of critical thinking. It would be better, if tutors not only ask students for the right answer, but give them the right question, which will open their way to get the answers. Critical thinking is just not being developed, because tutors always supply student with “right” theory and answers. Nothing logical, nothing to analyze, nothing to think hard of and train students brain. That’s why a good teaching consists in a need to give right questions to encourage student to find the answer by himself, and not only giving a correct answer directly.
